We’re not really a commercial type foundry. At least not yet. We’ve designed a handful of typefaces and are constantly creating custom type and lettering through the normal work of the studio, and this site is a showcase for those projects. Some day the fonts may be available for sale here, but for now, it’s more of a gallery. (More stuff coming soon!)

Hazen Type is brought to you by Hazen Creative, Inc., a graphic design studio in Chicago, Illinois.

Hazen Sans

The house typeface for Hazen Creative, Inc. It was inspired by the squarishness of DIN but the wider, more open proportions of Univers and Helvetica. It has a “hybrid” italic—an oblique with some characters styled after a true italic.

Rhinoceros

This font is based on Shawn Hazen’s normal handwriting, sloppy as it is. He scrawled out the title for a poster design and eventually turned it into a complete font. It’s since been used on several projects designed by Hazen.

Massive

This display typeface was built from the initial 5 letters of the custom Hazen logotype. It’s got all the fatness of a ridiculous wood type grotesque, but is much cleaner and almost geometric.
